TipJar, a service allowing reddit users to tip other users using cryptocurrency micro-transactions on the ETH network has been shut down due to low activity, Cointelegraph reports on October 8th.
The developer of the service explained the details of the decision in a reddit post, saying “The TipJar reddit bot is being shut down immediately, so tipping other users on reddit is no longer possible. The TipJar website will be shutting down on April 10, 2020. After that point, TipJar accounts will no longer be accessible and funds cannot be transferred. If you have an existing balance in your TipJar account, you should withdraw as soon as possible.”
Even though the developers state that the cost of servers running the service was minimal, they were paying them for several years and according to him, it no longer makes sense. This reflects a bit on the culture surrounding most cryptocurrency communities, wherein quality content is thought having to be easily accessible and free of charge, hence there is small wonder of the low volume of user transactions. It also begs the question how some other crypto tipping services are faring, with the Brave Browser content creation rewards being among them - but for those projects, the content rewarding is not the primary scope and with other means of funding, sustaining a non-profitable part of the business comes as much easier.
